From the Editor

We haven't been formally introduced. You, the faithful Woman reader, and I, the new editor on the block, are hopefully going to get to know each other very well. Coming into Woman Magazine has been a fun and exciting opportunity for me. I'm thrilled to be working with a talented bank of columnists and artists. I'm planning to work hard to bring you interesting and informative stories that peak your curiosity about being a woman in Santa Barbara.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm originally from small-town Maine. I made the move west more than three years ago to go back to school. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with California's weather and the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean. Now, as a mother of a 10-month-old, a graduate student and an editor, I am thoroughly, and happily, transplanted here in Santa Barbara.

I'm looking forward to my third holiday season in California with extra cheer. The first reason is that I am waiting to see the glee on my son's face when he encounters twinkle lights for the first time. Creating our holiday issue of Woman comes in a close second. In this issue, you'll find a bevy of ideas to help you get through the holidays without breaking a sweat or the bank. Which, to me, is almost more important than pumpkin pie. Almost.

Take a look at page 10 for our tips on making it through the season in a healthy state of mind. Mental health is never a trifling matter and during this season it becomes even more imperative that we take care of ourselves. With all the fantastic resources available, there's no need to spend one more day missing the magic of the holidays.

I hope our column by author and artist Sandra Magsamen will fill you with the spirit and inspiration that it offered up to me. I've had the pleasure to speak with Sandra and she is truly an amazing woman. Her column is sincere and comes, like all her work, from the heart. She works to inspire us all to live a good life, whatever the season.

As you peruse this issue, I hope you'll think about what you like, and perhaps dislike, about Woman. Our new Letters to the Editor section will debut in our spring issue. In the meantime, I'll be looking forward to hearing from you and getting to know you better.

Happy Holidays!
